Being a teenager is not easy, but it is also not an easy time for parents. Some teenagers will rebel in any way that they can. Some do it because they have a terrible home life and they need to escape the pain they are feeling. Others do it because they have low self-esteem and they fall victim to peer pressure. In others, no real reason can be found, but that teen is probably hiding something painful that happened to them that their parents may even be unaware of and may never know. Teenage drug abuse is a huge problem and the start to a problematic life. Stop it now no matter how angry you make your teen. In the long run, you can drastically change the course of their life for the better.

Most parents are unaware of teenage drug abuse. This is because they think their little angel would never dream of doing drugs. This is a very dangerous assumption to make. Others do not know simply because they have given up on parenting and have no idea what their children are doing. Parents need to know that they cannot stop parenting and that they have to be alert to the signs of teenage drug abuse so that they can stop it before it goes too far.

You have to be nosy to keep your kids safe. This extends far past teenage drug abuse. This can prevent someone harming them because of sexual abuse and can also stop them from committing suicide. Parents have to tick their children off to keep them safe at times. This means knowing where they are, who they are with, and even smelling their breath when they come home. If you see signs of teenage drug use like bloodshot eyes, lethargic or erratic behavior, ask questions until you get answers. If you suspect use and they won’t talk, curtail all activities and do all you can to keep them at home.

Parents also have to be on top of the situation at all times. Your teenager may very well say that they hate you and that you are messing up their lives, but you have a right to know what they are doing. This means you know passwords to social networks and look out for duplicate pages that they may create to keep you out. This also means you have access to text and picture messages and you know every single place they go online. You should look through cell phone contacts and ask questions and even snoop through their room if you suspect teenage drug use.

Teenage drug abuse is not hard to spot if you truly pay attention to your children. There are changes that take place that do not seem to be a normal part of getting older. Those that start taking drugs make more drastic changes in their appearance and habits than the typical teenager just trying to find out who they are on their own. Be snoopy, be diligent, and do not accept wild stories as excuses for being late. You have instincts when it comes to your children. Listen to those instincts. They could save their life.
