Steps To Writing A Book
You want to write a book. You have a few good ideas and you want to see if what you have to offer is good enough to be printed. Most people think about writing a book here and there, but most people do not get far enough to say that they really gave it a good try. There are thousands of unread and unfinished manuscripts sitting in drawers and on computer files out there that are nothing more than a memory to the person who wrote them. If you start with a clear idea of your own steps to writing a book, you have a better chance of sending it out for attention, which is what very few actually do.
Some of the early steps to writing a book include deciding what you want to write and gathering ideas for an entire story. Having a vague idea is not enough, though it is a good place to start. First, you have to think about what you want to write. If you are not sure, think about what you enjoy reading the most. This is usually where you should start and is what you would write about the best. Next, understand that you have to have at least two major plot points, strong characters, and a strong ending that concludes everything with the pages. This is not as easy as it sounds.
Once you think you can say that the above has been accomplished, the next steps to writing a book include character development and research. Your readers must care about your main characters or they won’t care what happens to them. If they do not care, they will not read to find out. These characters must have strong points and they must have flaws. They must also have room to grow in a positive way throughout your story. It they do not, they are going to be dull, dull, dull! Research your time period, your locations, and anything you write about (like medical conditions) that you do not have first hand knowledge about for your story.
When you have all of this swimming around in your head and jotted down as notes, your next steps to writing a book are getting down to the business of writing and editing. Remember that rewriting plays just a big a role as the writing does, so look for guides to help you so you get it right. There are how-to books out there that you can buy that cover just about anything. If you are writing romance, there is a book out there for that. If you love mystery and want to make sure your mystery is not a dud, there is a guide book out there for you too. Using one of these guides can save you a lot of grief.
You may also want to go with non-fiction writing. Understand that a publisher will want to know what your book has to offer that cannot be found in current books on the shelves. There are also clear steps to writing a book that is non-fiction and there are also guides out there to help you. The process is different but the end result is the same. You want to get published. Make time for your project, follow advice and get it submitted.
